Stability for The Next Generation

Andie_2

For over 20 years the Bay Area has been home for Andie, a nurse who is raising her three children here.

Her youngest just turned 8, and her twin daughters now attend Cal State Chico.

Having a stable and affordable home in which to raise them was key for their well-being and growth. Prior to homeownership through Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco, their living situation and rent was unpredictable. Andie shared, “I couldn’t imagine being where I was before, in an apartment with rent going up and up. They wouldn’t even do a yearly lease, so it was month-to-month. That was a really terrible feeling as a parent to know that we might have to move at any time.”

Her children’s education has always been a priority for Andie, and with the predictability of her monthly Habitat housing payment freeing her from worry as well as allowing for saving for college, Andie feels even more empowered to support her children’s learning. Andie said, “This predictability has helped me to budget and plan, so I could save for my daughters’ college. It was a great sense of accomplishment and pride to be able to provide them with the things that they needed to begin their new journey!”

The stability provided by homeownership allows for many practical benefits — including saving and building an asset to be passed along to future generations. It also provides for less tangible and equally important outcomes. One such example, Andie explains, was her daughter selecting her college major. “I really do feel that a lot of her confidence and clarity to make decisions has stemmed from the environment and stability she got from living in our own home.”
